Here's How To Choose The Right Braiding Hair

In the past 6 years, I think the most asked question I get is, “Marquetta, girl what kind of hair do you use for your braids?” In this video, I explain different types of wet-n-wavy braiding hair available and the ones I choose to wear for braids and why.

I want to hear your thoughts! Make sure you leave a comment.

I’m getting my hair braided in October, and I have heard about so many different brands of hair I just would like to know whats the best brand of hair. I will be getting it from a beauty supply store and I want to know what is the best. I’ m getting micro’s but they will not be that small. Please help me by giving me a few different brands of hair. Thank you in advance.

You dont have to start with cheap hair ( cheap hair will make ur styles look bad) You have to get quality hair and pass that cost on to your customer. Dont sell yourself short. Also try to make deals with the hair suppliers if you buy more they tend to give you a discount.

I would pick the his and hers hair b/c I live in San Diego. The braiding shops do not supply the hair so I have to buy the hair from beauty supply. Human braiding hair is very expensive out here. I would probably pick the Janet encore hair or the his/hers. I used the Janet hair and like it. I don't like a lot of curl with wet-n-wavy so a little is great for me.

hi marquetta, this is imani. I'm new to getting my hair braided. I want invisible braids, but I don't know what type of hair to use. I just watched your video, I was thinking about getting remy hair , but I'm glad I watched your video since you said remy hair is not for braiding. I want a nice European type of hair that I can keep using over and over again, and that won't damage my hair that i can find for a reasonable price. Also, I will like to know what size invisble braids should I get- Imani

I would use the least expensive brand because like you said it is still a good choice and I redo my hair almost every 6 to 8 weeks depending on the growth and the edges more re3gularly.I would offer the various options to clients and let them make the informed decision for themselves. Thanks for the tips Marquetta they are truly helpful and I have found myself becoming more and more confident as a stylist because of you.Fidelia

    Hello Marquetta,

Do you think you could do a video like this for human hair to use for twist braids. I've been wearing that style for a few years now. When I first started wearing the twist braids my stylist used hair from His and Hers call Zig Zag Curl. They have change the composition of the hair and it is now to silky and the braids will not stay twisted. I'm looking for human hair because the synthetic hair irritates my scalp. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the tips. I am a beginner at braiding. I braid my daughter's hair because she is unable to go to a salon. We have been using synthetic products and wonder which brand you recommend for that. We will also look for and price human hair for braiding as well. When using human hair, how is the braid suppose to be sealed at the end?

She uses the synthetic hair and I would like to know which of the synthetics you recommend (if any). We will look for the human hair as well and price them. How do you seal off the end of the braid using human hair? any help you can give is appreciated.

Marquetta thanks for the info. I’ve purchase hair for weaving from Sultryhair.com and it was fabulous. The hair last for many, many months and the texture never changed. I recommend their hair to every woman looking for good quality hair. I’m thinking about getting braids and will take your advice on not using hair with cutical for braiding.
If you’ve purchased from this site before, what hair do you think is best for braiding? I truly value your opinion.
    Thanks

Enjoyed the info on the different types of hair especially since I'm getting ready to get my hair braided. However, when you display an item (dark colored), put it on a light background. The dark hair placed on a dark table was hard to see any comparison. Items displayed on an opposite colored background shows up better.

    hi marquetta
i am a hair stylist i have been braiding hair since i was twelve. i always would go with the type of hair for braids that has the best texture. i braid my own hair and once i bought some hair that was 7.99 it was “human hair quality”. It braided well and everybody thought i had paid 40.00 for itand i found that it was very thick and it was more hair in the bag. I remember when i got a job. So i could afford the more expensive hair. Then Milky Way was 26.00 for a 14 inch and that hair tangled up on me and i had to take my hair down a month later. I worked at this hair store for 2 years and a 14 inch costs 34.99 fo colors 1-4 and as you have shown the higher “quality” is thin. A lady bought some wet and wavy Milky Way and the hair bled. The store owner insisted that it was the cheaper brand and i knew that it wasnt because i had sold the lady the hair and i have braide with the cheaper brand and the lady never complained. I notice they have Remy micro hair for 89.00 and they always recommend that as being high quality and the best for braiding and weaving. I recnetly braided my hair with some hair that costs 14.99 for a 14″.I was wondering what can i use so it wont look dry and dull because the #4 is fine its the mixed color that i have that looks dull. And do you use MIlky way hair. And if so what is you opinion of it

Marquetta, I found some bulk hair in ,y stash of hair, (it was intended to be used for a fusion job) in a hurry to take my own hair, I forgot this was cuticle hair! I took to my braider!
I was in Brooklyn New York, at a braiding salon, fell asleep, in the chair!
The braider did a beautiful job as always, but you could see in her face, when she said, I do not know if you are going to like that hair!
It took a total of half an hour between the time I left the shop and hit the drizzling air in NY that weekend, that by the time I arrived at my resting destination, my hair was so tangled, behind my back that I literally cried for this was my own doing! not the braider!
Marqueta, I had just seen your video about the week before and completely forgot about this!
Well, now I have to wait one more month before I can take this down, because I paid for the workmanship of it and I have to grin and bare this until at least the middle of November!
    You know, this is true……….

It was very informative. As for the quality of Beverly Johnson products, the last lot of hair I got of hers was synthetic latch-hook hair and found it was made in Indonesia. The synthetic hair was the best quality I have ever come across so far, but human hair from Indonesia is less likely to be of good quality as the sources of hair is limited compared to China, Hong Kong or Korea.

Watching this video about buying and picking the right hair for braids had always been and experiment for me. I've always known what I wanted but unclear about the type of hair to buy to get that look. I have spent a lot of money on braids in the past. Each time my hair was braided my look was short lived, due to stiff, tangled or shedding hair brands. I really enjoy your knowledge, help and concern in teaching about hair care. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH. I wish you continual success. Bobbie
P.S I will be purchasing those hair tapes soon. Thanks again

His and Hers Hair Goods does have a better quality and selection of hair, and like the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Most people would love the luxury of purchasing hair that is of high quality, but when your funds doesn't allow that then you do what you need to do.

Your demonstration was good, but it also showed that the more cheaper package of hair had the least amount of hair in it by about half, so therefore; it would have cost just as much as the Janet (Encore) if it had as much in it.

I don't wear braids anymore and I let my clients choose what they want because most people think you're trying to make a buck off of them when you give them suggestions. But I agree, it is better to spend top dollar on a great quality hair and have it last than constantly buying a cheaper quality.

First of all I would like to say thank you for all that you do for our industry, you have served as a major inspiration in my life, so I thank you for that. I would have to agree with you on the Beverly Johnson hair. I have used it in the past for sew-in weaves and the quality has gone down. I can tell when my clients come back for maintainance and I shampoo the hair it gets very matted and hard to detangle and it was never been that way before. Out of the hair that you have shown in this video I would have to choose the human hair from his and hers. I have very long hair (almost to the middle of my back) and I would have to have the longer hair and also I work out so I would need good hair that would be able to stand to get shampooed often, so paying the extra money would be worth it to me if I can leave the hair in longer. No one wants to spend money and then have to take braids down after a couple of weeks because of the quality of the hair that would be a total waste of money and I have been in that situation before.

The type of hair that I would pick would very much depend on the amount of money I 'm working with when dealing with the client. If money is no issue it definently would be the His & Her brand, but if the clients budget is tighter it would be the Black Tide brand. I appreciate this and all of your training videos.

    Hello how are you?
Thanks for that informative video. I would choose his and hers hair because of the constant wetting and washing and as you mentioned the sillcone will stay in tact longer. If I was in a rush I wouls choose the one that would curl better. But what do you do when you only braid the edges and weave the rest of your hair. How do you choose the hair. How dark is your natural black remy hair? Patiently waiting your response.

I just wanted to make a comment on the hair I would use, I am a stylist who wears alot of braids and I have tried alot of different types of hair but I have found the the hair I used to love (Beverly Johnson) is nothing like is used to be, so I have been getting the more expensive hair. I agree with you that the cheaper hair feels better than the more expensive but when you are keeping the braids of for atleast 2 months it just does not stay that way for the duration of the style. I will be ordering some hair from his & her.com.

It all depends on the type of hair you're wearing. I have to wash my hair at least once per week.

There are some shampoo's for weaves that work well by extending the life of the actual hair.

I'm sorry you've had such a horrible experience with Braids! Just like braiding hair there are so many different choices for weaving hair. If you're looking for something that lasts for a long time I'd definately go with Remy hair. If you want decent quality I'd go with Outre.

  95. Marquetta Breslin says

Great point! There are many different ways to braid in hair. It doesn’t have to be folded at all, some fold it in the middle, and some fold it only a few inches down. I'm familiar with those techniques and know how to use them.

In my experience with Remy hair my hair was braided by someone in a braid salon and she was not familiar with the technique I was trying to explain to her so, at the time (years ago) I agreed to let her go ahead braid my hair using the traditional technique (folding in half) not realizing I'd have a mess on my hands….LOL!

I tell them that I prefer to use the hair I have because I know it is going to last and do what I want it to do. I love being able to communicate with you like this. Please continue to keep us educated. I have a question. What do you think about the Gro Protect Solution. It can be found at morningglory.com.

I strongly disagree about what you are saying about high quality cuticle hair not being the choice for braids. The problme is not the hair, but the technique you are using. If you fold the hair in the middle to braid it in, the cuticles (who are like shingles on a roof) do not point in the same direction and therfore tangle. We have a technique that allows us to braid the hair in without folding it. The hair can be washed daily if you like, styled as you like and it does not tangle but stays beautiful for many, many months unlike the cheap cuticle free hair.

  128. magicstylesalon says

I disagree about what you say about using Remy hair as braiding hair. The problem of tangling is not caused by the hair, but by the technique you use. The cuticles have all to point into the same direction, because they are like shingles on a roof. In order to achieve that, you cannot just fold the hair in the middle and braid it in. We use a different technique to braid it in which does not require folding the hair in the middle. Remy hair braiding in that way does not tangle, even if you wash it daily. You can style it any way you like without having to worry, too. It stays beautiful for many, many months.

    Hello. Mrs. B

I don't wear braids anymore because I've gottend them done in peoples homes and even from some African sisters that came recommeded. In all cases my hair broke off horribly…I'm wearing wigs and growing my hair out but would like to know what do you recommend as a good quality hair for weaves. I'd appreciate a response if you have the time…and Thanks in advance if you are…and have a wonderful day.

  132. Marquetta Breslin says

I'm leaning towards that direction with my hair too. Well, not totally. I use yarn to cornrow my hair when I do my sew-in's. If/When I decide to get my hair braided again, I'll definately be using some human hair…LOL!

  133. Marquetta Breslin says

You make some great points! You're exactly right. Wave pattern just isnt enough. The “cheaper” hair was not marked 100% human because it wasn't. It was a human hair blend (blended with futura) and I'm okay with that. I've had pretty good experiences with the human hair blends and braids. I will not hesitate to use this type of hair especially if I know I'm not going to leave them in a while.

I dont think it was the brand at all. It was simply the fact the the cuticles were still in tact and no longer unidirectional during the braiding process. If you've found one that's awesome, I have yet to find one that works.

  134. Marquetta Breslin says

For me I change my look all the time so out of wisdom I don't invest a whole lot of money in my weaves I am actually not real big on braids for myself because i have a lot of hair and it just takes too long and I don't like to sit for hours on end getting it done (lol) but anyway I have clients who like you work out a lot and I recommend the sew-ins so that they can continue to shampoo their hair and keep their scalp free from bacteria and it gives them the longevity that they are looking for in a hairstyle -and it keeps me making money (lol) I really enjoy watching your videos from time to time keep up the good work keep doing your thing girl and be blessed

I just want to say thank you for the explanation on the different types of braiding hair. To tell you the truth I normally go with the cheap brand of hair. The last time I had mircro's, I brought 3 packs that costed me $14.99 each. In the beginning, the hair was great, but I decided to jump in the pool and couple of days later the hair was tangled and trashy at the ends. I told myself I would have to buy the better type of braiding hair. Now since I have watched this video, and you provided us with a website to buy the hair in bulk, I will now purchase my hair from this website. Again thank you.

It all depends on the type of hair you’re wearing. I have to wash my hair at least once per week.

There are some shampoo’s for weaves that work well by extending the life of the actual hair.

I would pick the cheaper brand as I always do. When I'm in the store I feel the hair. If it doesn't feel right I move on, but cheaper is good for me. The wave doesn't matter to me any more b/c when I'm done braiding my hair, I braid them in big sections (about 6-8 big braids) dip them in hot water, let them dry all the way overnight, unbraid them and you have beautiful waves that last until you take your braids out. I have people asking me how I get my hair so wavy. I wish I thought of this when I was in high school. The wave didn't last as long probably b/c of the type of hair I was using which was cheap.

Dear Marquetta, I have been a “weave queen” for many years because although my hair is very long (down my back), my hair is thin and it has no body and eventhough I am not a liscensed hairstylist nor a braider, i have 3 girls and I have been doing their hair for years as well as my own. I have tried many types of hair from synthetic to human and from straight to curly and wavy and I have found that a small store on ElSegundo in Los Angeles has a very good quality of hair called “Cappelli” hair (micro mink yakki). I have used and reused it time and time again for several months and the quality stays the same as if I just bought it. No shedding, thinning, or tangling. However I do wash and condition the hair with Pantene Relaxed and Natural for women of Color. Now as for braiding I have found a synthetic hair for $5.99 per pack (Kinekalon or something) but its where you can curl it or crimp it if you spray it with water first or set your curling iron to a certain temperature, which is very good. I used to be a faithful customer of “His and Hers” hair for many years but when my hairdresser told me to get the cappelli hair I use no other and the price is very reasonable. I do believe however if you go to buy your own hair you should touch it, touch it, touch it. A trick that my hair dresser told me too was to hold the hair at both ends and bend it in half, and if hair sticks up its not a good quality.

Hi Marquetta, I have recently been receiving your emails and I appreciate all the tips and advice. I am currently wearing loose braids that someone else did and I hate them because she told me she could do tree braids and she was a liar. Since I will be doing my own braids from now on, I can tell you without a doubt that I would purchase the $60 hair. I really can't afford it, but I need the hair to last and look good through frequent workouts and shampoos. When I did my own braids in the past, I used the synthetic because the human hair always slides out. Even when I've paid people to do my hair they usually asked me to get the synthetic hair, but it irritates my scalp. I swore the last time I bought a bunch of human hair for braids that I wouldn't do it again because they would slide out because I didn't anchor correctly and/or matte up, then my fingers would get so tired and I'd give up. I could start a hair store with all the leftover human hair that I will never use and my husband is beside himself over all the money I've spent for supposedly “quality” hair that looked great in the package and like crap a week later. I have been very frustrated with my hair experiences – can't say I'll EVER do the salon thing again for braids, but I really love the look of braids and the loose braid style suits my busy schedule and gives me the flexibility I want. So I am going to take a chance again and try the human hair using the technique I learned from your tree braid video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on that, by the way…I'd been trying to find someone who knows how to do tree braids (and won't charge me an arm and a leg) for a long time. Admittedly, I didn't know they were called “tree braids” until I saw your video, so maybe I wasn't communicating clearly with folks. I'd always say, “I want thin, loose braids where the anchor at the root is invisible – no huge “knots” or “balls” showing, as my hair is thin around the edges, and tie the ends so they don't unravel.” They always say they understand and I end up with huge knots at the root of each braid and an obvious patch of nail glue on the end of the braid to keep it from unraveling – yet another irritant to my scalp. So I have a question, and I noticed several others posted the same one: What is the BEST type of hair to use for tree braids? Will the HisandHers European Wavy work well for this type of braid? Since I am growing out my relaxer and my own hair is pretty course, would you recommend I use a different texture than the European Wavy? Thank you so much for your help and advice. And thank you for being willing to share what you know.

However I have a problem I am bald on the sides so it makes it hard for me to be able to pull my hair back into a ponytail. When I wear weave it looks thinner because of the baldness on the sides of the head, do you have any suggestions for this? I had my beautician glue the hair on the bald spots but that was a big mess and very uncomfortable.

When I braid my own human braids, I usually go with what I can afford at the moment. The only brand i've used of the ones that you mentioned was the mid grade Janet collection. I have used that and I think that is the best hair to use. Not only does it feel good, the amount of hair that is provided is a good amount so you wouldn't have to go and buy three packs just to complete one head. I also use a brand called Bio. That brand is really good also. When others come to me to braid their hair I usually use whatever it is they bring, or if they ask i usually tell them to buy either Janet or Bio in whatever length and color they choose. I have a question, is there any shampoo you would recommend for braids? I too wash my hair frequently and I find the hair gets matted up and comes loose from the roots too quickly.

    Hey Marquetta,

Thank you so much for all that you have provided for us. You are definitely an inspiration to me and I'm sure many others.
If I was still using human hair I would have brought the one that felt the softest to me. I used to use human hair all the time for my braids but found I spent just as much time styling them as I did my own hair and that was not a timesaver nor as carefree as I would have liked it to have been. Because I like the carefree, shake and go I've been using synthetic hair with a curl. I find it last longer than human, after several washings and still looks good after 6 weeks. I did buy Encore-wvg to make my first wig and I love it. I will purchase that brand again.
However if and when I do use human again (and I'm convinced that I will), I will get it from my new vendor “HisHer”.
Thanks again for all of your knowledge and wisdom you keep dropping on us.

Thanks for all the good information you share with us, especially us new beginners. I would like to use the encore or european wave from his and hers. I have some saga remy for making a lace wig that my sister bought from the hair store for $75 a pack and it doesn't look or compare to the remy on your site.
I see the difference in texture. Thank you for loving us enough to share your God given talent and information.

As usual you cease to amaze me with your knowledge and your attention to detail. These are all the questions we, as women, need to know. African American women spend more money on hair and beauty supplies than most other women. We definitely need to be smart with our choices. Thanks, again.

I'm going to that website right now to place an order, since I was just about to have my hair braided. Thanks for the insight on this issue, you were right on time.

I mostly try to buy the best quality of braiding hair instead of the price I am going to pay for getting my hair braided. Marquetta, you are right about when buying certain types of wave hair the lengths will vary. The store I buy my hair from normal be out of the best quality hair because there is an african braiding shop that buys in bulks when this item is available. If the best quality is out of stock, I will buy the next best quality. Again, Marquetta I will buy the best quality of hair versus the cost of getting my hair done. I have noticed in the past that some brands of hair is much thicker, shiner, and has great lengths. The video has really made me make better selections when it comes to buying braiding hair. Thanks for all your latest tips on different styling techniques. May God continue to send you many humble blessings your way.

Got a question I am a hairstylist myself out in Texas. Central texas is the area that I live in and let me tell you we have some funny weather. one of which being it is very humid here. it seems that I have tried just about every “Quality Hair” on the market. for example Model Model, Beverly Johnson, Milky Way, Zury, Enstyle and Janet Collection and Bobbi Boss. No matter the price every single one of these brands last no longer than 2 weeks before the shedding, tangling, frizzing and matting. trust me I know weaves i don't even wear my real hair cause I'm so weave dependent. i try not to use alot of heat on the straight hair, i use heat protects when heat styling, tie the hair down at night with silk or satin bonnet. Don't use harsh shampoos on it professional products only. Still the hair never lasts the duration of a normal sew in. Now i just resort to stocking cap wigs and synthetic hair. it seems the longer you go in length with store bought hair the more drama it is to make it last. the quality is horrible. Is there any tips you can give me or refer me to human hair other than remy that will actually behave at least for 1 month.

I have also used Milky Way and that quality is not the same any more. I did a full sew in about a month ago with Milky Way and as a wrap style the hair was fine, but when the client came back in for a more curly look the hair would not stay curl. The next day the curls were hardly there. Back in the day when I was doing sew in you could do a full sew in and have hair left over now you need 2 pack to make the sew in look full with some brands. I have did a little research after having problems with hair and 100% human is not 100% human. It only has to have a % of human to be considered 100% human. I don't think that all expensive hair is the best hair. I have purchased hair that was $70.00 and after a few shampoos it start to shed and thin out like hair that is priced @ 15.00. And that is really frustrating.

I use this trick for tight braids. Take a silk scarf and wet it with hot water, just as hot as you can stand it. ring it out and place this one your head. The steam loosens your scalp. Just make sure the scarf is dry enough, so the water doesn't cause your braids to fall out, also try and find someone who doesn't braid too tight, you don't want to pull your natural hair out.

  258. V says

I'd pick the hair with the best wave. I like loose waves so i'd probably pick the $12.99 or 14.99 hair. I don't like to spend a lot of money on the hair, the place i go to usually charges by the size of the braid too. So i end up spending around $150.00 when you add the price of the hair.

    M, B,
Thank God you are inspired to do and share videos like this present one. People like me need you.
I would purchase the hair from His and Her.com because I like to wash my hair at least once a week to take care of the sweating that goes on on the scalp. I must thank you extensively for doing this segment because I had similar thoughts with weaving hair. Can you do a similar one for weaving hair?
I have used the bulk hair for braiding for the past five years. My hair is thinning because I am greying and I guess because I have been braiding for a long time. I cannot find a wig to use (as I work daily) while I give my own hair time to breathe without a weave or braids. I trust your expertise.Help!
It is not long enough to do anything natural that will allow me to go with my own hair style and not draw attention to myself. I like the wet and wavy because It blends in with my edges and this helps to make a natural look. Those expensive or cheap glossy straight dark hair screems it is a fake on my head. The best wet and wavy I used was by Black Diamond. Again I got disappointed this last time because when I washed my hair black dye water was running off the extension hair, leaving a light brown color that did not match my 1B COLOR hair.
Another thing, just like the lengths not all off black, 1B are the same. I called for a IB and got a reddish brown color. Question- Can you recommend a good 10 inch , 1B weaving hair with a thinly sewn weft. Unfortunately , the hand-tied unravels once you cut it to sew the wefts in.
I know you are knowledgeable in the hair business. Looking forward to aresponse.

    Hello Marquetta,
I must say you know your Hair, I too have found that just because something is considered more pricey doesn't mean that quality follows it! Just by viewing your samples I can tell that the cheap brand had the most quality when it comes to appearance, But what you really want to keep in mind that People who wear Human Hair want hair that will last! I always check for shedding hair before purchasing any Human Hair. The 1st pick had body, it didn't seem to get tangled quick as you played with it and I didn't see signs of shedding from the end of the hair. Also because we normally use products to keep the hair clean and moisturized it's also a good habit to add a small amount of conditioner while sampling the hair along with water. You want to see if and how quickly the hair may tangle up before allowing your entire hair to be braided with that hair. Most hair that is manufactured now days can easily past the water test, but the real test is the day to day products which most people use to maintenance the hair. And I thrive on hair that displays a healthy and replenish look and continue to be durable while using it along with my own hair. Too many times I made the mistake to assume that the hair was quality because of the looks of it! And once I had braided this hair into my own I was very disappointed when It couldn't hold the same quality it displayed in the package. That made me aware that manufactures have covered there grounds when it came to water but for most products the hair tends to change it's texture immediately! And that is what I believe most of the people hair I've done Values. I too have realized that BJ has lost it's Quality years ago as well! So I've stopped using it as much. Just wanted to share this with you and your viewers! Keep Up the Good Work.

Hi it was really nice to hear your thoughts on Hair. That is my number one dilimma when trying to choose hair for braiding. When I go to the salon I normally just get whatever they provide. But If I had too purchase something hair and wanted it too look good through the washes, I would probably go with the more expensive one from his & her.com. It's already expensive to get braids and weaves, so in my opinion don't short change yourself if you plan on keeping the hairstyle for a long period of time. If it's just for a special occasision and you plan on removing it in two weeks then by all means choose an option that is more cost effective.

I dont think there's anything wrong with synthetic hair as long as it's removed properly and is not left in the hair for an extended period of time. One thing that I've found about synthetic hair is some individuals have reactions to synthetic hair. My Mom, for instance is one of those individuals. Her scalp turns red and she has severe itching. If you havent had any reactions to the synthetic hair thus far, I think you're good to go.

    Hi Marquetta,

This video has helped so much. I was getting ready to buy remy hair for braiding. Thank God I saw this video first. I see that remy hair is for weaves only. I like the look of the his and hers I liked that pattern but i loved the quality of the his and her european wave. I been getting braids for years and i would always go the beauty supply store and get the most expensive hair because I am about quality when it comes to the hair I have gotten the janet collection as well as 24k. did not know that you can order hair online I went to this salon and asked her if she knew about tree braiding and she did not know what I was talking about. (as a matter of fact I went to a couple of salons they did not know about tree braiding). I live in conneticut, bridgeport and everyone goes down to Harlem N.Y. 125th street to get there braids done by the africans I want more of a professional salon look. The braids I always dreamed about was N'bushe Wright from 3 strikes now her braids are nice. Even the girl from living single that went with Overton I can not think of her name her braids were nice to. I am looking for fullness and quality is that braids or is that sewned in. also how many packs would i need for a full head thinking 18 inches to 24 inches

    Thank-you

Hiya, I've never had my hair braided using false hair, only had it weaved. I would choose the middle price range – $60.00 sounds like a lot of money for me.

When I have braided my hair, it never stays tidy for more than 2-3 weeks so I don't think it would be cost effective for me to spend a large amount of money because the hair lasts longer.

Thank you for all your email messages by the way.

Hi, the video is very informative, unfortunately we dont have alot of buisness inMalta for braiding but being a salon owner/educator and a hairdresser I like to keep myself informed. Well done and keep it up. Look foward to keep receving such usefull info.

    Nikki,

That's interesting. I ordered a Front Lace Wig from them when they first started making them. I never actually wore the wig because there was just too much hair in the front. Thanks for sharing that information!

I like Milky Way. I've used it for weaving before if I knew I'd only be wearing the style for a short period of time (2 to 3 weeks). It's possible that their braiding hair will be the same.

    M, B,
Thank God you are inspired to do and share videos like this present one.

I have never used his/hers, I have used Lugo and I liked their products. I have not found too much hair at the beauty supply store that really liked. But mos the people's hair I have braided go straight to the store and purchase the cheapest hair they can find. The problem that most of them have is that the hair irritates their scalp, what could cause that. Then the other problem they run into i that they don't wash their hair, I have told them how to do it without producing massive tangles but they just won't do it.

    BreAnn,

That's true some of the “cheaper” brands are not 100% human hair. Good point.

If I HAD to pick a Remy hair that I'd wear that was store brought, I'd probably go with Saga Naked. This brand is said to have absolutely no chemicals, or additives. I havent tried it but, from what I've read and heard it seems to be pretty good.

    Hello Marquetta,
I must say you know your Hair, I too have found that just because something is considered more pricey doesn’t mean that quality follows it! Just by viewing your samples I can tell that the cheap brand had the most quality when it comes to appearance, But what you really want to keep in mind that People who wear Human Hair want hair that will last! I always check for shedding hair before purchasing any Human Hair. The 1st pick had body, it didn’t seem to get tangled quick as you played with it and I didn’t see signs of shedding from the end of the hair. Also because we normally use products to keep the hair clean and moisturized it’s also a good habit to add a small amount of conditioner while sampling the hair along with water. And once I had braided this hair into my own I was very disappointed when It couldn’t hold the same quality it displayed in the package. That made me aware that manufactures have covered there grounds when it came to water but for most products the hair tends to change it’s texture immediately! And that is what I believe most of the people hair I’ve done Values. I too have realized that BJ has lost it’s Quality years ago as well! So I’ve stopped using it as much.

It’s already expensive to get braids and weaves, so in my opinion don’t short change yourself if you plan on keeping the hairstyle for a long period of time. If it’s just for a special occasision and you plan on removing it in two weeks then by all means choose an option that is more cost effective.

I believe most people would be satisfied with that product, I believe you said it was the Beverly Johnson brand but that is my thoughts on that. Although, if I wanted to achieve a more wavy style, I would pick the low grade hair because it is very wavy. I also have a question for you….When doing tree braids, if the client has long hair can you still knot it up where you are supposed to or would you braid down to where their natural hair ends? Or is this just a style for people with short hair?? Please email me back at your earliest convenience if possible. Thanks and have a great day.

The braids I always dreamed about was N’bushe Wright from 3 strikes now her braids are nice. Even the girl from living single that went with Overton I can not think of her name her braids were nice to. I am looking for fullness and quality is that braids or is that sewned in. also how many packs would i need for a full head thinking 18 inches to 24 inches

  304. weave-a-diva says

Hello, Pretty good video, but as a beauty supply owner and a wig and weave diva :).. there's more to picking hair than the wave pattern and feel of the hair. First make sure you are buying 100% human hair. I couldn't see the title of all the packs but the 12 dollar hair was not marked 100% so it's most likely a human hair blend (human hair mixed with futura or some type of synthetic hair) which is not going to last long. Be careful because some packs are marked 100% natural human hair but it is also a blend. If you are looking to keep a style for a long time pick 100% human hair if you can afford the 60 dollar hair than buy that, but if you can not afford to pay that much for hair there are silicon shampoo's and conditioners on the market that will prolong the use of 100% human hair throughout several washes. One more thing I've had very good experiences with remy braiding hair, so it could have been the brand you were using.

Thank you , Eternally for making this video I order my hair from HairSisters.com/ ClairHair.com. I am a self-braider noone taught me I learned from Trial n Error. I watched your video with my daughter and she loves it as well. I tell people that my ability to braid (micros) is a tedious yet rewarding skill . I have seen BlackTie hair at GMBHair.com/ not sure if I spelled that right and I was interested in ordering it ,but I am unsure about the Itch factor you didn't stipulate if it itches the back of your neck or scalp. Can you please let us know if this hair causes any of those problems. Thank-You Marquetta I have some of your Dvd's and I have to say your are” One of The Best” , Peace , Titania Knight :).

I tend to go for the look and Feel myself. I don't fall for the line that “this is the best Quality hair we have”. Usually That only me it is the most expensive hair they have. Becuase everybody do different thing when they get their hair braided, mostly pulling it up into a ponytail. In which you have to be sure the hair won't tangle. I prefer to use hair with a very loose body like the cheaper brand you had. The Encore I thought was way to wavy and would probably end up looking like Diannah Ross and tangle more quickly. Most people who get their hair braided are looking for something easier to maintain.

I have two little twin girls that are adopted from Ethiopia. They are 3 years old. I live in Utah and there are not a lot of good resources for African American's in this state. I have been told a mixture of things about braiding. It has become confusing for me. One hair dresser tells me to ONLY use human hair, because the synthetic is made of glass particles and can break the hair. She recommended His and Her's Afro-Kinky hair. A couple other hairdressers said that synthetic hair is just fine and that you don't have to spend the extra money to use the human hair. So right now my girls have synthetic hair in their braids. What do you think?

Depending on the texture and length, I would use the cheapest. Reason being, hair cost alot of money and within a couple of months you have to take them out anyways, furthermore, you have to pay alot more to get it done. 322. kberry05 says

Honestly, for my own braids I just choose whichever one feels the softest as long as it's less than $20. I don't keep my braids up for very long (6 wks or so) so I don't want to invest too much money in them. Also, I don't have much hair loose at the ends so I don't have a great need for waves or anything. It's really all about the cost for me, so I would likely go with the $12.99 one. Although I prefer the 18″ so I imagine that would be about the same price as the mid-grade hair eh?

I've only had my hair done once in a shop (horrible experience) and I have no clue what they used.

I really appreciate this video. I normally go to the hair store and pick the most expensive HOPING that is it a good grade of hair. I have been disappointed time after time. I like the wet-n-wavy and I have my hair braided now. I purchased a Beverly Johnson brand that I guess one could say is more of a jheri curl, however I paid $60.00. I was told to stay away from the cheaper hair b/c it is probably not 100% human hair. Anyways, once again, I really do appreciate this and this makes my decision to get my hair braided easier. I an not all about the cheap hair but if I know it will work better than the other more expensive brands in the store then I will by the cheaper hair. I will also look into hisandher.com to see what kind of hair they sale for braiding hair.
One last thing. I am really interested in the Villusion hair that you sale but is there anything that you would reccommend from a hair store? Thank you for your time.

Great Video! I really love the way you teach! To answer your question, if I had a style that required lots of hair, I would use the $12.99 brand based on the information you provided. If I could afford it though I would use the European Wave from http://www.hisandher.com just maybe 14″ instead of 24″. I am very new to this so this video really helped. I have only braided my hair with synthetic in the past. Is that bad? Is there a good synthetic brand as well or should you always braid with human hair?

Enjoyed the video, I'm a stickler for feeling the hair before I purchase it and I always tell my clients to do the same. I use this trick for tight braids. Take a silk scarf and wet it with hot water, just as hot as you can stand it. ring it out and place this one your head. The steam loosens your scalp. Just make sure the scarf is dry enough, so the water doesn’t cause your braids to fall out, also try and find someone who doesn’t braid too tight, you don’t want to pull your natural hair out.

I’m leaning towards that direction with my hair too. Well, not totally. I use yarn to cornrow my hair when I do my sew-in’s. If/When I decide to get my hair braided again, I’ll definately be using some human hair…LOL!

  335. weave-a-diva says

Hello, Pretty good video, but as a beauty supply owner and a wig and weave diva :).. there’s more to picking hair than the wave pattern and feel of the hair. First make sure you are buying 100% human hair. I couldn’t see the title of all the packs but the 12 dollar hair was not marked 100% so it’s most likely a human hair blend (human hair mixed with futura or some type of synthetic hair) which is not going to last long. Be careful because some packs are marked 100% natural human hair but it is also a blend. If you are looking to keep a style for a long time pick 100% human hair if you can afford the 60 dollar hair than buy that, but if you can not afford to pay that much for hair there are silicon shampoo’s and conditioners on the market that will prolong the use of 100% human hair throughout several washes. One more thing I’ve had very good experiences with remy braiding hair, so it could have been the brand you were using.

    • says

You make some great points! You’re exactly right. Wave pattern just isnt enough. The “cheaper” hair was not marked 100% human because it wasn’t. It was a human hair blend (blended with futura) and I’m okay with that. I’ve had pretty good experiences with the human hair blends and braids. I will not hesitate to use this type of hair especially if I know I’m not going to leave them in a while.

I dont think it was the brand at all. It was simply the fact the the cuticles were still in tact and no longer unidirectional during the braiding process. If you’ve found one that’s awesome, I have yet to find one that works.

hi Marquetta, I really appreciated the video and you did provide a lot of information. i used to braid my hair a lot with either human hair or synthetic hair but i always found the hair itching after a week or so of having it in and it would not last any longer than a month. I still braid my hair but i do not use these kinds of hair anymore.. I have switched to yarn… they are less harmful on the hair because the texture it’s almost like your own hair… the only thing is that they get really heavy once they are wet and they may dry out your hair a bit so you have to keep putting in some kind of moisturizer but other than that they are great. I have been wearing them over the past year and i have gone from a low cut to a head full of hair… they really stimulate hair growth and they are very light on the hair as well.

Thank you , Eternally for making this video I order my hair from HairSisters.com/ ClairHair.com. I often use the higher price synthetic ,but when I can afford it I get Human hair my natural hair texture is like newborn baby hair , so I have to be careful. I am a self-braider noone taught me I learned from Trial n Error. I watched your video with my daughter and she loves it as well. I tell people that my ability to braid (micros) is a tedious yet rewarding skill . I have seen BlackTie hair at GMBHair.com/ not sure if I spelled that right and I was interested in ordering it ,but I am unsure about the Itch factor you didn’t stipulate if it itches the back of your neck or scalp. Can you please let us know if this hair causes any of those problems. Thank-You Marquetta I have some of your Dvd’s and I have to say your are” One of The Best” , Peace , Titania Knight :).

I would pick the cheaper brand myself just because it seems as “I” can wear it straight, or I can deep wave it. Either way, i'm a stylist, and want to have a different style on me everyday to represent who I am. And, I agree with you on the BJ hair. Keep up the good work, and can't wait untill the other DVDs that you have coming out. Are you going to update the Insiders Club Online vids as well?

I tend to go for the look and Feel myself. I don’t fall for the line that “this is the best Quality hair we have”. Usually That only me it is the most expensive hair they have. Becuase everybody do different thing when they get their hair braided, mostly pulling it up into a ponytail. In which you have to be sure the hair won’t tangle.

I live in Utah and there are not a lot of good resources for African American’s in this state. I have been told a mixture of things about braiding. It has become confusing for me. One hair dresser tells me to ONLY use human hair, because the synthetic is made of glass particles and can break the hair. She recommended His and Her’s Afro-Kinky hair. A couple other hairdressers said that synthetic hair is just fine and that you don’t have to spend the extra money to use the human hair. So right now my girls have synthetic hair in their braids. What do you think?

    • says

I dont think there’s anything wrong with synthetic hair as long as it’s removed properly and is not left in the hair for an extended period of time. One thing that I’ve found about synthetic hair is some individuals have reactions to synthetic hair. My Mom, for instance is one of those individuals. Her scalp turns red and she has severe itching. If you havent had any reactions to the synthetic hair thus far, I think you’re good to go.

      • noelnielsen says

Can you tell me the proper way to remove the hair? Is there a wrong way? I have taken the one twins hair out at 5 weeks and I am taking the other one’s hair out today, at 6 weeks. Is that okay?

Depending on the texture and length, I would use the cheapest. Reason being, hair cost alot of money and within a couple of months you have to take them out anyways, furthermore, you have to pay alot more to get it done. If you can afford it, go for the one that’s most pleasing to you. You are right about BeverlyJohnson hair. I wouldn’t use it again. Thank you for taking your time to explain the different quality versus prices. You saved my time in looking for hair.

  350. Sonia says

Thank for the information on hair braiding. I love any thing that is European texture but would rather go for the cheaper hair depend on my budget.

Marquetta, I want to thank you for ALL the information you have made available regarding braiding and hair. 5 years ago we adopted 2 African American children. We are Caucasian and live in a predominantly white community where no ones knows anything about their hair. The information and knowledge that I have obtained through your web-site and blogs has made an incredible difference in our lives. I get tons of compliments on my daughters hair and we owe you a great deal of thanks. You are an angel! Thanks so much for all you do. We truly appreciate you! God bless.

I have another question, what about human hair for kinky twists? I keep hearing about it but can’t find it at a beauty supply or when I Google it. Have any suggestions?

You can also find the Afro human hair for kinky twists at hairsisters.com and clairhair.com I think it is called the Marley braid? That is where I saw it.

  354. Gwen Lucas says

Thank you Marquetta, very informative. I am now getting back into braiding hair. I have been out of the loop, but this video is on the money! I do have a question though. Do you use either one of those brand hair for cornrowing also or is it just for box/loose braids? (No question is a silly one right:-). What about synthetic for cornrows?! Thank you. Be Blessed!

  355. says

Hey Mrs. Breslin…I actually have purchased hair from His&Hers on Wilshire (not sure if they have more than one location) and was totally dissatisfied because it tangled so much (it was a front lace wig). I’m assuming from your demo that their bulk hair is coating-free but I’m still a little wary of purchasing from them because of this past experience. It looked like the amt of hair in the “expensive” pkg was much, much more than the cheap brand which probably caused it to be more expensive. I liked the cheaper brand but I like how BJ’s got wavier after getting wet.

What do you think about Milky Way? I used it for weaving and liked it but the style didn’t last long because it got super matted. Do you think the braiding hair will do the same?

    • says

      Nikki,

That’s interesting. I ordered a Front Lace Wig from them when they first started making them. I never actually wore the wig because there was just too much hair in the front. Thanks for sharing that information!

I like Milky Way. I’ve used it for weaving before if I knew I’d only be wearing the style for a short period of time (2 to 3 weeks). It’s possible that their braiding hair will be the same.

  356. kberry05 says

Honestly, for my own braids I just choose whichever one feels the softest as long as it’s less than $20. I don’t keep my braids up for very long (6 wks or so) so I don’t want to invest too much money in them. Also, I don’t have much hair loose at the ends so I don’t have a great need for waves or anything. It’s really all about the cost for me, so I would likely go with the $12.99 one. Although I prefer the 18″ so I imagine that would be about the same price as the mid-grade hair eh?

I’ve only had my hair done once in a shop (horrible experience) and I have no clue what they used.

  357. BreAnn says

    • says

      BreAnn,

That’s true some of the “cheaper” brands are not 100% human hair. Good point.

If I HAD to pick a Remy hair that I’d wear that was store brought, I’d probably go with Saga Naked. This brand is said to have absolutely no chemicals, or additives. I havent tried it but, from what I’ve read and heard it seems to be pretty good.

  358. TMCFinancial says

  359. Yolanda Haskett says

Enjoyed the video, I’m a stickler for feeling the hair before I purchase it and I always tell my clients to do the same. Depending on how long the clients wants to leave the hair in and the type things they will be doing helps me direct the client in choosing what hair to purchase. I like the wave pattern of BJ hair, but I also like HIS & HERS BRAND the hair look so soft. Have a great day!

  360. J says

Thank you. This was very informative. I could not really see the wave pattern when the hair was wet because of the dark table background. I would choose the His & Her Co. brand because of your experience of frequent washing and the long lasting sheen. In a pinch, I would buy the humans hair one that felt the softest.

  361. Jannai says

Thanks for the great information. This will definitely help when picking out braiding hair. Keep posting info like this. I would not get my hair from the salon if I did not know what I was getting.

  362. keslea2 says

I thought this was very good information. I normally go by how the hair feels and looks. The cost is important too, but mostly how it feels. I purchase hair from a beauty store. There is much more of a variety. From the choices of hair that you had, I would go with the Black Tide.
