Murder In Charleston! A Discussion With Batt Humphreys

I just finished reading the novel Dead Weight by Batt Humphreys.  I loved the book so much, I called Batt in for an interview.  We talked about a crazy murder in Charleston, the Ku Kulx Klan and more!  Be sure to check it out and leave your comment under the blog.  Enjoy!

Is Batt married. Batt is cute. Does Batt like brown sugar? I just threw that in for free.

Great interview…can't wait to read the book and support the cause. I don't believe this is promoting blame but awareness and a collective effort for justice. South Carolina is a beautiful state with beautiful hard working people. Let's repent SC so that God can heal the land.

Great interview!!! I, like Mr. Humphreys, grew up in those tumultous times. Sadly to say, there is still a very silent undercurrent of that mindset present today. Because of many unknown reasons, Michael Donald of Mobile, Alabama was horribly beaten and murdered by members of this same hate group. This is in no way to imply that all hate groups are white. Also, this is not to imply that our justice system is always making decisions on righteousness or justness. In some instances, we chose to be politically correct rather than stand for God's righteousness. Today's Negro or Blacks equates to Mexicans. Please be mindful that the group of young men that murdered Michael Donald proclaimed to be Christians. What a way to demonstrate or confirm our beleif in Christ?!!!!

I certainly appreciate the efforts of Mr. Humpheys to seek correction to an error in the justice system in South Carolina. It takes a leap of faith and a brave soul to make such a stance. I am encourage to love mankind and live peacefully as much that lies within me with others.

I live in rural Alabama where the presence of such hate groups still exists and typically rules these areas. Being employed by the Federal government and working around the world, I have experienced such a more peaceful environment. However, God who is the strength of my life and my hope will not allow me to turn my back on those I can enlighten or fight those that hate me because of my convictions.

Mr. Humphreys' book will continue to shed light in many different ways to many that have not met the truth in resolution. We, as a people and nation, will have to accept the truth whether it is or is not a part of our psyche that really mean spirited people exists. In order for us to move forward, we must keep our hands and heart clean from all bitterness, anger and wrath. Let's move forward in the Light of the Lord!!! We have children and grandchildren that should not suffer because of our refusal to accept God's truth and demonstrate God's unwavering love.

Enough said, Fight a good Fight of Faith in our Lord and Jesus Christ. Hold fast to his promises and do as he would do in times of adversity. Love and Peace to you!!!!

Great interview! I will get the book today

The interesting thing about the Michael Duncan story is that it was not that long ago. The incident involving Michael Duncan occured in 1981! It's interesting because it's kind of like what Batt and I were saying about how the KKK was willing to use random black men to make an example of their power.

  • Marquetta Breslin

It's funny you said that! I said the same thing to Batt yesterday after the interview. I can easily see this book as a movie!

The book seems to be very interesting in that it is a true story reminicisnent of the happenings in the south at that time. I think people would buy it. I listen to this interview, but at the same time I want to know if you are wearing a lace wig, or is your own tresses so very well groomed. Perhaps I have come to know you as the hair lady and I need to broaden my interests, but for right now, I probably would want to hear you interview people concerning hair and what you do. But other than it, it is a good interview.

  • Marquetta Breslin

    Gloria,

I will definately be doing some interviews about hair. It was important for me to tell everyone about this story as reading is part of what I do a lot of! LOL This story really hit home for me so, I wanted to share it with all of you! :-)

No, that's not a Lace Wig, I'm wearing a sew-in that I did a little over a month ago. I used my brand, Vellusia Remy Hair 20″ natural black. Here's the site if you're interested. http://www.vellusiaremyhair.com

This was truly a moving interview. I believe it was Dr. King who said “An injustice anywhere, is a threat to justice everywhere”. Yes, I will sign the petition as well as buy the book. As a mother of five African American sons, I think about that 23 year old man's mother and think “if not for the grace of God, there go I”. We must not forget , lest we relive those days of atrocities. Although we have come a long way (having our 1st African American President) the fear that drove some white Americans to such a degree of hatred is alive an active in our (yes) United States of America.
On a lighter note, Marquetta has anyone told you lately you may very well be on your way to being the O.W. (You know who I'm talking about) of hair care? Will you be starting your own book club? :)

  • Barbara Grayson

I really enjoyed the interview and i will be purchasing the book soon. Keep up the good work Ms. Berslin

Just ordered the book for myself and my friend. Can't wait to read it! This interview sold me on it!

  • Terri

Marquetta, I've just viewed this interview blog, and I must say that I'm intrigued to read this. I read “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”, and enjoyed it, so to hear Batt draw that comparison really sealed the interest in this book, along with your great response and review of it. Thanks for sharing.

I just finished reading the novel Dead Weight. I appreciated Mr. Humphreys perception. He vividly revealed no justice for the contemptible Negro Daniel Duncan. Unfortunatley, prisons are full of Daniel Duncans imprisoned by the KKK. So much has changed but it's still the same.
