“They specifically said, ‘Black women don't have blonde in their hair, so you need to take that out.'”
The statement above is a quote I got from an article posted on Huffington Post.
What was it about?
A Baltimore women allegedly being fired from her job at Hooters because of…get this….her blonde high-lighs.
She was fired because her boss thought it was inappropriate for her to have blonde hair.
Here's more of the story…
Farryn Johnson, according to the article said she was let go from her job at Hooters because of her “improper image” (REALLY?!) after refusing to get rid of her blonde highlights.
Johnson went on to say…
“I didn't see that it would be a big issue just because there were a lot of other employees working at the restaurant of other races with color in their hair. For instance, there were Asian girls with red hair and Caucasian girls with black hair and blond streaks so I didn't think it would be an issue for the little piece of blond highlight in my hair.”
Johnson has filed a racial discrimination charge.
Her attorney, Jessica Weber told CBS the following,
“The law is clear that employers can't have two separate unequal sets of rules—one for African-Americans employees and one for everybody else, and yet that's exactly what Hooters did here in firing Miss Johnson, an African-American employee solely because she's African-American. They targeted her because of her hair solely because of her race,”
Wow! I was really shocked when I read this given the amount of women, not just African American women, who color their hair blonde.
Was he wrong? YES in fact, there are black people who ARE born with blonde hair. The Solomon Island are home to quite a few very dark-skinned individuals with blonde hair.
The bottom line is it doesn't matter what you do to your hair as long as it's professional, neat and clean.
What do you think about this? I'm very interested in hearing what your opinion is in this matter.
