“Our marketing budget is very low. We need to sell more retail. The stylists need some additional training…”
Today as we waited for my Mom's fluid to be drawn off, Nya and I decided to go grab some lunch.
We just so happened to be seated between two marketing directors for a popular chain salon, and two hair stylist from a local salon somewhere in the area.
The 2 directors were seated at a table on one side of us, and the two stylists were seated to the left of us at the bar.
My ears couldn't help but perk up when I head the words, retail, salon, and marketing coming from both sides.
It was like hearing two sides of a story. The stylists were chatting with the bartender about things that went on in the salon, while the marketing directors talked about how bad their staff was at selling retail.
It made me think back to the time I had my own salon. Selling retail was another revenue stream for us. So was selling Vellusia Remy Hair, DVDs, Seminars, and at that time I was would take on a wig making project here or there for the Film Industry.
We were still creating because we understood that having the salon was purely for passion, that wasn't something I did out of necessity, it was something I did because I was passionate about doing hair.
With that in mind, it was very important to have a diversified income because I didn't want to HAVE to spend my time behind the chair at the salon hoping my clients would show up.
That's why when we decided to take my Mom in to live with us, closing the salon was no big deal. There was plenty to fall back on because of all of the products we had created that we're still selling if the salon was opened or closed.
