Yep those were the words that I had a client say about me a long time ago when I first started to take braiding seriously.
I did some of the best box braid I'd ever done.
Her exact words are etched in my brain and they went something like this…
“Who did your hair?…Oh Marquetta did your hair…girl I will never go back to her, she made my scalp bleed!”
I'll be the first to admit I was once a “tight” braider. I felt that if I didn't pull every existant strand, even the lango hair (soft baby hair)! I didn't know any better.
My reaction when I first heard that was to bad mouth the young lady, but I fueled my anger into figuring out what I did wrong and how I could fix it.
I reluctantly contacted the former client and let her know that I was aware of the conversation, and I wanted to apologize. I also asked her if she could explain to me what happened so I could fix it for the future.
The bottom line is her hair was too tight, but it wasn't just that the braids were too tight, because she was in the military she had to pull her hair up and with the combination of the tention from my work and her ponytail her scalp started to bleed.
Instead of blaming her of course I took full responsibility and immediately started to think about what I did wrong and how I could improve my technique.
I wanted to maintain the integrity of the clients hair, yet still have beautiful braids.
After years of perfecting my technique I have finally been able to figure out how to maintain the integrity of the clients hair without causing too much discomfort.
The end result is NO BLEEDING and no hair loss due to tension.
How did I do it?
It's all about the attachment. I teach this exact technique in my brand new downloadable video Box Braids.
The attachment method barely scratches the surface in terms of what you learn on that video.
It's 50 minutes of pure instruction, no full or filler.
If you havent gotten a chance to check out the sample video. Go ahead and check it out.
