Anyone who has seen the classic movie “The Color Purple” remembers that scene when Shug Avery looks up at Ceily and slurs the words “You shole is ugly!”
I can only imagine how that made Ceily feel…it reminds me of how my client may have felt after she did her big chop.
Let me backfill you on her story…
Almost a year ago a friend of mine decided to go natural. I was so excited for her and assured her that I would help her transition with sew-in's, braids, ect.
Well last week, she decided to finally do her BC (big chop). She was ready to have all of her relaxer cut off.
She came in and to make a long story short, I chopped off all of her relaxer and low and behold she had the most beautiful head of natural hair I've seen in a long time.
I've seen her for years relaxed, and even braided, and she was always a pretty lady, but seeing her with her natural hair brought about a different kind of beauty.
I could REALLY see her face and how truly beautiful she was. Now, I'm not one of those “if you dont have natural hair you're not beautiful” types of people, but she did have a sense of confidence and sassiness when she walked out of my salon that I had never seen before.
She was so happy and excited and I was just as excited for her!
A day or so later I got a phone call from a mutual friend who told me she'd seen my clients hair and agreed that she exuded a new type of confidence.
Here's what really bothered me…
My client explained to our friend that she walked into an establishment all done up, rocking her new fro when all of a sudden she see's out of the corner of her eye a lady sneaking to take a picture of her hair.
She realized what she was doing when the girl's camera flashed. She looked at her with a stern face and the girl snickered and almost ran away.
At the end of the day, my client was not phased one bit! She turned around and kept it moving.
Instead of laughing at each other, and sneaking to take pics let's help each other out. Suggest some styling options, or just keep your mouth shut!
Hurting someone's feelings is not worth it.
Be blessed,
